Ignition is really excited to have recently been chosen to design and build the exhibition stand for Cheshire West and Chester. CW&C are taking up the same space only site at the LGA Annual Conference at Bournmouth in July. The exhibition stand design is interactive and in keeping with exhibition stands that have been previously been comisioned by CW&C it is going to be a lot of fun.
Designing interactive exhibition stands within the constraints of a moderate budget has become a regular challenge for the team at Ignition who recently delivered hi high tech stand for Bold Communications Limited at IFSEC.
Clearly client confidentiality prevents me from disclosing too much but needless to say once the exhibition is underway Ignition will be proud to showcase the project as it demonstrates a great exhibition stand design within a sensible budget.

Commissioning the design of a custom exhibition stand takes financial commitment and time. Choosing an exhibition stand designer that understands your needs and you can trust is a complex task but if you prepare beforehand the process can be smooth and even enjoyable. Ignition - creative exhibition stand designers - has compiled this guideline to help you the client through the process of exhibition stand design, the planning of your exhibition stand through to the preparation of your exhibition stand and how to manage the results of the pitch process.
Bespoke Exhibition Stands - ROI
With any exhibition stand, your company is about to invest a large proportion of the Marketing Budget and resources into an event that often lasts no more than three days. It is vital that you are able to maximise the return on that investment on your exhibition stand. This exhibition stand guide will help you to define success, measure the success and contribute to the success of the process.
Exhibition Stand designs - Writing the brief
If you have the time it is always worth writing a brief. However simple your exhibition stand brief is, a written document can become the basis of the brief and a good design consultancy will be able to work with you and develop a detailed exhibition stand brief.
If you have had an exhibition stand in the past, it is a good idea to have a good think about what has happened and what was good and what didn’t work so well. If you can get some photos of the last exhibition stand it is always helpful.
If you have not had an exhibition stand before then the task is slightly more difficult and you might be more dependent on the experience and competence of the exhibition stand designers to help you explore opportunities with the layout, possible exhibition stand activities and key components of the exhibition stand. If you have visited an exhibition stand that you have liked in the past then try to write down things that you feel worked as a delegate and maybe things that worked less well.
As a simple guide a brief should consist of the following headings
. Project Title - What where when
. Project contact details - who is the primary client contact – Project Champion
. Project Background - Any information that might help the designer understand the history of the brief
. Project Objectives - Decide whether the objective is out shine the competition, sales, new product launch or a combination.
. Details - How many, how big
. Desired outcome - Ideally how would success be achieved
. Considerations - any other information etc
Once you have written the brief there are certain activities that will need to be undertaken to move the process along to the final goal, of ensuring that you investment produces the return that you are anticipating.

Over the past five years or so trade show booth design has take a big shift towards incorporating new technology and becoming more interactive. This shift couldn’t have been any more apparent at the years E3 expo which is one of the worlds biggest exhibitions for computer games. Although some huge budgets were spent on stand there the use of clever lighting and inviting props shows just how useful technology can be in trade show booth designs.
At Ignition we have a great appreciation for technology and when the right projects come along we can’t wait to use it. You might remember the stand we did for Plastribution for example where we used some clever lighting effects. We have a lot of fun with that project and the E3 expo reminded us that if technology is used in the right way and can be used to magical effect.

Producing powerful exhibition designs is what we love best at Ignition but such things take practice, skill and of course a little bit of perfectionism. We regularly get asked about how to add flare to a design and create powerful designs so we thought we would share some of our ideas and inspirations with you.
Inspiration
Inspiration comes from many places and in many cases comes when you least expect it and is core to any project.
a product of your creative thinking and work
When beginning a project we look at creating a brief and use our current understanding of a product or service to generate idea’s. These ideas and brain storming sessions generate new thought patterns and in turn inspiration. Inspiration for most comes from their personal interests and we also use exhibition events and online resources as a source of inspiration.
Understanding the Brief
We often go on about getting the brief right on our site but we can’t stress the importance of understanding your client when creating a design. Afterall the design is supposed to not only attract people to the stand but also tells visitors about a companies products and services in an informative and exciting way. Essentially you will find it extremely difficult to create a powerful exhibition stand design without this understanding.
Design
Now that you have some form of inspiration and understand you clients business it’s time to get down to creating the design. This is the fun part. In most instances i will first look at the shape and size of a stand and plan a visitors journey. We want to look at designs that will make people interact with the stand. It is important to make the stand flow effortlessly and not create barriers to visitors interactions. Nice open spaces usually work best.
At Ignition we use computer software to produce designs however one very important design consideration is materials. The choice of materials is literally endless but the skill is to find materials that blend well. You then of course have to consider technology, lighting and colour schemes. We usually use company colours as a foundation of our schemes but blending in exciting and eye catching tones can help create a truly powerful exhibition stand.
As with many things detail is crucial. Detail can be the difference between a medicore and a truly exceptional design. For example while a representative is talking to one group of people what can the others do in the stand. Are there facilities to hang a coat, have a drink or even sit down? All details worth thinking about. It is also worth keeping the design flexible so clients can add things in.
We hope the ideas here have been useful and you can see many examples of our exhibition stands on our client pages.

I have made a note in my diary to ‘Blog’! I should be blogging twice a week I am told. I don’t have time to do anything ‘non essential’ twice a week. I clean my teeth fourteen times a week, put the bins out once a week and other than that it’s grab time in between work and projects.
The good news is we are busy and more importantly working on some really great exhibition design projects. One that I really want to talk about is FILMCLUB, a government funded organisation that helps schools set up film clubs in secondary schools. The benefits are obvious, “Setting up a film club is a great way to stimulate and inspire young minds - it’s a shared experience that encourages debate, discussion and social interaction.
It provides pupils with a unique opportunity to be inspired by the magical world of film while gaining new insights into other cultures.” Have a look a the website www.filmclub.org, set one up in your school! The refreshing change in this project is that it is for the benefit of schools and their pupils. There is something extremely rewarding about providing a service that is outside the B2B or B2C sector. Another similar project we are working on is a joint venture with Manchester based events company Ear to the Ground. We are working on the design and production of a huge event that will be in Cathedral square later this year. It is a mix of museum design and exhibition design. We have been asked to design and develop a series of interactive displays to help a multinational household brand celebrate 125 years of business. I can’t say much more but keep an eye on this space for more ‘public’ updates. That’s all for know, Blogging complete for a few day’s, back to work!

Ignition has been experiencing an increase in overseas traffic to it’s website and an increase in interest in creative exhibition design services. The strength of the Euro is encouraging overseas clients to look at the UK for exhibition design and build services as the cost of European labour and transportation is expensive compared with the UK. Lewis Horton, Ignition Director said “We have seen an unprecedented increase in enquiries from overseas customers who are trying to maximise there marketing budgets. This means that we are once again competitive within Europe and are in a good position to capitalise on the exchange rate”. UK based clients who are interested in exhibiting overseas are now looking for UK exhibition designers to step up to the challenge. Lewis added “We are now looking at taking six large exhibition stands to Germany and Italy over the next six months and this trend looks set to continue”.

The trade show market has been steadily growing in recent years however with the recent economic down turn the significance of presenting your company through an exhibition has never been higher. Trade Shows provide the opportunity for your company to present to a specific audience who are eager to discover new services, products or partners. Consequently it is absolutely crucial that decisions you make about the design of your exhibition stand will help deliver the right message and contribute to a successful exhibition experience. Ignition’s experience in the exhibition market is vast and over the years we have worked with several simple principles that help result in a positive, successful exhibition experience.
First and foremost, planning is one of the most critical factors for success. Decide what you want to get from your investment at the trade show, are you interested in expanding your customer base, promoting a new product or service or just wanting to increase your company profile within the market. Advanced planning provides you with time to decide key factors such a s budget, support collateral (for example company exhibition brochures), additional marketing activity that might be required and simple things like scheduling the staff rota and ensuring that holidays don’t clash.
It’s really important that your company is presented in a positive in a positive light, remains approachable and can deliver the message that you have decided to deliver. Staff training is a crucial and often overlooked aspect of exhibiting. Your staff need to be prepared for difficult questions the inevitable interrogation by the competition and the ‘gift hungry’ students.
You are going to amongst you competitors, fighting ‘cheek by jowl’ for new customers. Knowing what these customers are interested, knowing what will attract them and knowing how to engage them is crucial to making your neighbours green.
At Ignition we understand that our clients are committing a large proportion of their marketing budget to the event and consequently anticipate a return on that investment. We work with a wide range of clients, some have a strong understanding of what they want out of the exhibition and some have very little idea at all. We develop creative concepts and deliver real results. We incorporate all aspects of the exhibition process from literature to large double decker stands. Our exhibition stands are always creative, appropriate and delivered on time and on budget. Our aim is to exceed our customer’s expectations and help their companies stand out from the crowd.
